Links to related pages Home Introduction Thrust-powered race cars, and thrust-powered vehicles for that matter, are off in their own little corner of the automotive world. With the cancellation of the Chrysler turbine car project, the development of turbine cars for the street was essentially stopped in the early Sixties. In the late Sixties, Andy Granatelli built a car for the Indy 500 that really got USAC upset, and the car was virtually banned from competition due to the rule changes they imposed. This is documented in Granatelli's book, "They Call Me Mister 500", one of the most fascinating and entertaining motorsports-related books you could read. Today we see turbine applications that include the world's fastest wheel-driven race car, the Team Vesco Racing Turbinator Streamliner, helicopters, unlimited hydroplanes, and in use as power generating systems in remote locations. Thanks to the recent interest in thrust-powered LSR cars that was generated by the ThrustSSC team, we can expect to see these cars given more consideration by engineers and racers for many years to come.
